The physicians of Urology, PC and Nebraska Hematology-Oncology are collaborating in a unique GU Tumor Conference that will give patients the very best coordinated care around. Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, and Urologists from NHO and UPC come together weekly to consider all treatment facets and national guidelines to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for patients who have been diagnosed with urologic cancers such as bladder cancer, prostate cancer, or kidney cancer. Why is coordinated care important for patients?
Cancer patients will benefit in multiple ways. One of the most important things a GU Tumor Conference does is give patients multiple recommendations from several different specialists without having to physically travel and see multiple different physicians. Urologists, Medical Oncologists, and Radiation Oncologists can be in contact earlier to provide the therapy needed to treat new advanced disease states.
Cancer has become tremendously complex in the last 15 to 20 years as our understanding of cancer and cancer treatments evolve. This requires a team approach from multiple specialties to make sure we’re incorporating the latest treatments and most advanced techniques in managing the patient’s disease.
How does this make a patient's care more streamlined?
One of the most important things the GU Tumor Conference does is give patients multiple recommendations from several different specialists without having to physically travel and see multiple different physicians. It will also allow referring physicians the ability to make a referral to one specialty and receive recommendations from three or four specialists.
Once recommendations are decided upon, they are presented to the patient and the patient decides with their physician which course of action will be best for them.
What types of cancer are discussed in this collaboration?
Our physicians work together on all types of urologic cancers including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and other genitourinary cancers.
